Isn’t it time to move beyond polluting as a form of entertainment?

The video, “Firepit Safety from the City of Lethbridge” (formerly on the City’s You Tube channel) seems to encourage citizens to burn wood outside as a form of entertainment – kind of like watching an outdoor television.

In light of current and ongoing research about the serious impacts of particle pollution, the video’s message – promoting this activity for “hours of summer enjoyment” – seems dangerously outdated, as does the bylaw permitting it.

In our own and other communities that still allow backyard wood burning, it is time for a positive change.

Clean air matters, and so does community health protection.

Don’t our beautiful blue skies deserve protection from smoke pollution? Isn’t it time to move beyond burning?
